Lands of America recently had $1 billion in land and ranches for sale in the Old Dominion. This represents some 117,190 acres of land for sale in Virginia. The most expensive land listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $49 million, while the median price for land, ranches and farms in Virginia came in at $291,377. The average price of land for sale in Virginia was $408,457. Lands of America research shows that over half the land in the Old Dominion is privately owned. Virginia's 40 wildlife management areas total more than 200,000 acres, in addition to the state's other public hunting lands. Big-game species include black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and elk. Over 2,300 miles of wild trout streams beckon anglers in Virginia's Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. In terms of its size, Virginia is the country's 35th-largest state, covering an area of 42,769 square miles (27 million acres). Of its total landmass, 39,490 square miles (92 percent) is land, while the remaining 3,285 square miles comprises water. Approximately 11 percent is considered public land such as national and state parks, national forestland or other federally protected land. As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Virginia. Of the 133 counties in Virginia, Mecklenburg County had the most land and acreage for sale, while Wythe County was trending recently as the county with the most land sales recorded through the Lands of America Comparable Sales program.
