Of the 133 counties in the state, Halifax County had the most land and farms for sale. The most expensive land listed for sale in Virginia on Lands of America recently was $49 million, while the median price for land and other rural acreage for sale in Virginia came in at $283,845. The average price of land and rural property for sale in Virginia was $471,157. There was 3,233 acres of sold land in Virginia recorded in August 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects an increase in sales activity over data from July 2018. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $16.7 million. Halifax County recorded the most land sales recently in the state. Virginia's 40 wildlife management areas total more than 200,000 acres, in addition to the state's other public hunting lands. Big-game species include black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and elk. Over 2,300 miles of wild trout streams beckon anglers in Virginia's Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. With numerous opportunities to hunt species including deer, boar and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Virginia. WalletHub, a personal finance website, has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including affordability, quality of life and health care. In terms of size, Virginia is the country's 35th-largest state, covering an area of 42,769 square miles (27 million acres). In total, 39,490 square miles (92 percent) is land, while the remaining 3,285 square miles is made up of water.
